Anyone who wants to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) will discover that online programs will not satisfy all the requirements needed to meet LPN goals. The reason behind this assertion is that the practical nurse must take some on-campus courses to learn how to fully care for individuals in a variety of health care settings such as hospitals, long term care facilities, and physician clinics. The ability to learn skills needed in lab work and on the floor are not possible through anything other than hands-on experience.

With that said, students can participate in full-time and part-time LPN courses online up to a point where an ability to learn communication and bedside skills within a team environment is required.

Prerequisites for Earning an LPN Diploma

A student who wishes to work as an LPN must earn a high school diploma or GED and graduate from an accredited LPN program. LPN programs usually include one year of training at a hospital, vocational technical school or community college. LPNs are licensed by each state, so requirements vary by location. Many students who seek an online option for earning their LPN may find schools that promote this option; however, upon closer inspection, students may learn that many of these options focus on certifications offered to individuals who already are situated in a nursing profession and who already have hands-on experiences.

The Best Online LPN Degree Program

The Practical Nursing (PN) program at Distance Minnesota prepares students to practice within the scope of practical nursing under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The student is taught to use the nursing process at the practical nurse level in the maintenance of health and prevention of illness, the observation and nursing care of persons experiencing changes in health status, and the administration of prescribed medication and treatments.

A with any LPN program, the students who study distance nursing with Distance Minnesota will receive supervised learning experience in caring for individuals in a variety of health care settings, such as hospitals, long term care facilities, and physician clinic settings. The Minnesota Board of Nursing officially approves the Practical Nursing program at Distance Minnesota, and after successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for the Practical Nurse.
